Every year, thousands of science fiction writers, artists, editors, and fans from around the world participate in the five-day World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) with its variety of panels, exhibits, and events relating to science fiction themes.  Many of these people began reading science fiction and fantasy when they were young.  Not only did this inspire many to enter science and computer fields as they grew older, it helped develop them into lifelong readers.

The science fiction fan community has been drawn together by a genre that opens our imaginations to new worlds with every science fiction or fantasy work.  To encourage young people to find the same joys that we discovered, Bucconeer (the 1998 World Science Fiction Convention in Baltimore, Maryland USA), sponsored a Student Science Fiction Contest.

Over 100 elementary, middle and high school students entered the first contest in 1998 by writing a short story or creating a piece of art with a science fiction or fantasy theme or by writing a science essay.

With the success of this contest, Baltimore Worldcon 1998, Inc. sponsored the second annual Student Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest in conjunction with the 1999 Worldcon, Aussiecon Three, in Melbourne, Australia and North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC), Conucopia, in Anaheim, California.  Over 200 kids from Australia and North America entered our second contest.  Awards were presented at Conucopia and Aussiecon Three.

2000 – Baltimore Worldcon 1998, Inc. joined with Chicon 2000 to sponsor the third annual contest.  The winners for 2000 were announced at a ceremony during Chicon.  Over 300 elementary, middle, and high school students entered.

2001 – Baltimore Worldcon 1998, Inc. joined with the Millennium Philcon to sponsor the fourth annual contest.  The winners for 2001 were announced at a ceremony during the Millennium Philcon.  Over 300 elementary, middle, and high school students entered.

2002 – Baltimore Worldcon 1998, Inc. joined with ConJos to sponsor the fifth annual contest.  The winners for 2002 were announced at a ceremony during ConJos.  Nearly 500 elementary, middle, and high school students entered.
